FREE TEXT, HEX AND BYTE EDITOR

Find hidden characters in exact bytes

Updated

Hidden characters can affect text without appearing as ordinary printed symbols. OctetBench shows escaped text, Unicode code points and exact bytes so you can check a character or line ending in context.

Free to use. No account, email address or trial. Your work stays in your browser.

Escaped text showing a carriage return and line feed after Aé.
Read the line ending explicitly instead of relying on its appearance.

Start from the exact bytes

Choose hexadecimal input when the original line-ending bytes matter. Pasting text can normalise line endings in a browser. Hex or a local file lets you inspect the original bytes explicitly, within the 65,536-byte buffer limit.

The five hexadecimal bytes 41 C3 A9 0D 0A entered directly.
Exact hex avoids ambiguity from pasted line endings.

Characters and bytes are different

With UTF-8 selected, 41 is A and C3 A9 together encode é. A character is not necessarily one byte. The final 0D 0A bytes are carriage return and line feed.

UTF-8 bytes loaded into the inspection buffer.
Two bytes encode é in this example.

Read escaped text and code points

Open escaped text to see the line ending rather than an ordinary visual line break. The code-point view supplies another way to check the decoded characters. A different view does not rewrite the buffer.

An escaped representation of the decoded text.
Inspect before making a deliberate edit.

Inspection has boundaries

Text decoding is strict for the chosen encoding. Malformed hex input and invalid encoded text are different problems. OctetBench does not repair text automatically or detect every possible encoding. Previews show 256 bytes or 128 code points; complete counts and exports remain available.

MADE FOR DEVELOPERS AND INTEGRATORS

For developers, integrators and people checking exact values before using them in another system.

A USEFUL STARTING POINT

Make invisible differences inspectable

A line break or accented character can look simple while containing several bytes. Compare the byte representation with the chosen text interpretation before changing either.

FROM QUESTION TO EVIDENCE

Three steps to a useful result.

  1. 01

    Supply

Use exact hex or a local file when original line endings matter.

  2. 02

    Interpret

    Choose the text encoding deliberately.

  3. 03

    Inspect

Read escaped text, code points and bytes together.

A CONCRETE EXAMPLE

Five bytes, including a Windows line ending

41 C3 A9 0D 0A represents Aé followed by carriage return and line feed in UTF-8. The accented character occupies two bytes, and the line ending occupies two more.

WHEN CHECKS REPEAT

From a useful check to everyday work.

These SmartFACT services handle work that repeats across a team or on each job. The workbench remains free and independent.

SmartFACT Data

When reviewed reference values need to be maintained by a team, SmartFACT Data, including ConfigSheets, provides maintained tables and agreed receiving workflows. It is in early access.

LabelRules

When label requirements must be checked on every job, LabelRules turns requirements described in plain English into reviewed rules for label selection and value checks. It starts with an invited trial.

BEFORE YOU START

A few practical answers.

Does one character always mean one byte?

No. For example, é occupies two bytes in UTF-8.

Will pasting preserve line endings exactly?

Not necessarily. Use hex or a local file when the original bytes matter.

Does changing the view alter the bytes?

No. A deliberate edit changes the buffer.

Does the tool repair hidden characters?

No. It helps you inspect them and make explicit supported edits.

What are the current limits?

The buffer is limited to 65,536 bytes (64 KiB), with 20 byte-change undo steps. Byte-grid preview shows 256 bytes, character inspection 128 code points and comparison 100 differing positions; counts and exports use the full buffer. Supported encodings are explicit; invalid text is reported, never repaired. Browser text entry may normalise line endings, so use hex or a local file for exact original bytes. This is a small byte workbench, not a disk editor or file-format parser.

What happens to my data?

Your input, byte buffer, comparison and undo history stay in this tab’s memory. Files are read only when you choose one, never uploaded, and file names are not kept. Refreshing or closing the tab discards this work. Clipboard copies and downloaded files can outlive the tab. The tool has no analytics or automatic storage. These public pages offer the suite’s optional analytics separately; ordinary requests for pages, scripts and the same-origin suite catalogue may be logged by hosting providers.
