Decode Base64 to text

Updated

Base64 represents a sequence of bytes as text characters. OctetBench decodes that representation and lets you interpret the resulting bytes with a supported text encoding.

Free to use. No account, email address or trial. Your work stays in your browser.

A Base64-encoded order reference decoded to text.
Base64 decoding and text encoding are separate choices.

Choose the input representation

Choose Base64 and enter the encoded value. Base64url has its own input mode and alphabet. Select the mode that matches the source rather than silently treating the formats as interchangeable.

Base64 chosen as the input representation.
Declare the representation before applying input.

Decode the bytes

Apply the input to populate the byte buffer. Base64 is a representation, not encryption. Malformed input is refused rather than silently replacing valid work.

Decoded bytes loaded from the Base64 input.
Applying the representation produces bytes.

Interpret bytes as text

Choose the text view and an appropriate supported encoding: UTF-8, ASCII, UTF-16LE or UTF-16BE. Some byte sequences are not valid text in the chosen encoding. A new view does not rewrite the bytes.

The order reference readable in the text view.
Check the interpretation against the source you expected.

Keep the task small and explicit

The buffer is limited to 64 KiB. This is not a large-file decoder, decryption service, automatic charset detector or arbitrary file-format parser. Input stays in the browser, with no account or upload.

MADE FOR DEVELOPERS AND INTEGRATORS

For developers, integrators and people checking exact values before using them in another system.

A USEFUL STARTING POINT

Two choices, one readable result

First recover the bytes from the Base64 representation. Then choose how those bytes represent characters. Keeping those choices separate makes a surprising result easier to investigate.

FROM QUESTION TO EVIDENCE

Three steps to a useful result.

  1. 01

    Choose

Select Base64 or the appropriate Base64url mode.

  2. 02

    Apply

    Decode the input to bytes.

  3. 03

    Read

Choose the text encoding and inspect the result.

A CONCRETE EXAMPLE

An encoded reference becomes readable

The checked Help journey decodes an order reference, then opens its text view. The representation tells you how to recover bytes; the text encoding tells you how to read those bytes.

WHEN CHECKS REPEAT

From a useful check to everyday work.

These SmartFACT services handle work that repeats across a team or on each job. The workbench remains free and independent.

Early access

SmartFACT Data

When reviewed reference values need to be maintained by a team, SmartFACT Data, including ConfigSheets, provides maintained tables and agreed receiving workflows. It is in early access.

LabelRules

When label requirements must be checked on every job, LabelRules turns requirements described in plain English into reviewed rules for label selection and value checks. It starts with an invited trial.

BEFORE YOU START

A few practical answers.

What is Base64 used for?

Representing bytes using text characters for systems that need a textual representation.

Can every decoded value be read as text?

No. A byte sequence may be invalid in the selected text encoding.

Does this decrypt a secret?

No. Base64 is encoding, not encryption.

Can I decode an unlimited file?

No. The complete byte buffer is limited to 65,536 bytes.

What are the current limits?

The buffer is limited to 65,536 bytes (64 KiB), with 20 byte-change undo steps. Byte-grid preview shows 256 bytes, character inspection 128 code points and comparison 100 differing positions; counts and exports use the full buffer. Supported encodings are explicit; invalid text is reported, never repaired. Browser text entry may normalise line endings, so use hex or a local file for exact original bytes. This is a small byte workbench, not a disk editor or file-format parser.

What happens to my data?

Your input, byte buffer, comparison and undo history stay in this tab’s memory. Files are read only when you choose one, never uploaded, and file names are not kept. Refreshing or closing the tab discards this work. Clipboard copies and downloaded files can outlive the tab. The tool has no analytics or automatic storage. These public pages offer the suite’s optional analytics separately; ordinary requests for pages, scripts and the same-origin suite catalogue may be logged by hosting providers.
