FREE TEXT, HEX AND BYTE EDITOR

Compare hex strings byte by byte

Updated

Hex comparison checks whether two hexadecimal inputs represent the same bytes and identifies changed or missing positions. OctetBench compares exact byte sequences and lists the first 100 differing positions.

Free to use. No account, email address or trial. Your work stays in your browser.

A changed byte identified between two short hexadecimal sequences.
Read the offset and values, not just the decoded text.

Apply the original bytes

Choose hex input, supply the source and apply it as the current buffer. Hexadecimal letter case does not change a byte value. Use input syntax the tool accepts and check the parsed byte count.

The original three-byte sequence loaded.
Keep a known source as the basis of the comparison.

Enter the comparison sequence

Supply the second hex sequence in the comparison control. The operation compares bytes, not colour meanings, numeric magnitudes or filenames.

A second hex sequence entered for comparison.
Compare the intended exact sequences.

Read changed or missing positions

Run comparison and inspect each shown offset and byte value. The list displays the first 100 differing positions, while counts cover the complete buffer. Different sequence lengths can expose missing bytes.

The offset and values of the changed byte.
The displayed difference list is a bounded preview.

A refusal preserves valid work

Malformed replacement hex is rejected explicitly. It cannot silently overwrite the current valid buffer. The workbench handles at most 65,536 bytes, without directory diffing, disk editing, automatic repair or file-format interpretation.

Malformed input refused while the valid buffer remains.
Read the refusal and correct the source deliberately.
MADE FOR DEVELOPERS AND INTEGRATORS

For developers, integrators and people checking exact values before using them in another system.

A USEFUL STARTING POINT

Check the bytes behind the appearance

Similar-looking text can contain different values. Compare exact sequences and read the changed position before deciding whether your source needs correction.

FROM QUESTION TO EVIDENCE

Three steps to a useful result.

  1. 01

    Load

Apply the source hex as the current buffer.

  2. 02

    Compare

Enter the second sequence and run comparison.

  3. 03

    Check

Read offsets, values and full difference counts.

A CONCRETE EXAMPLE

One changed byte

The checked journey loads three bytes, compares another sequence and identifies one changed position. It then submits malformed hex to show that valid work is retained after refusal.

WHEN CHECKS REPEAT

From a useful check to everyday work.

These SmartFACT services handle work that repeats across a team or on each job. The workbench remains free and independent.

SmartFACT Data

When reviewed reference values need to be maintained by a team, SmartFACT Data, including ConfigSheets, provides maintained tables and agreed receiving workflows. It is in early access.

LabelRules

When label requirements must be checked on every job, LabelRules turns requirements described in plain English into reviewed rules for label selection and value checks. It starts with an invited trial.

BEFORE YOU START

A few practical answers.

Does hex letter case change the bytes?

No. A and a represent the same hex digit. Input must still satisfy the accepted syntax.

Are only 100 differences counted?

No. The list previews 100 positions, while counts cover the complete sequences.

Can it show a missing tail?

Different lengths can produce missing-byte positions.

Is this a large binary-file diff?

No. It is a browser-local small-buffer comparison, limited to 64 KiB.

What are the current limits?

The buffer is limited to 65,536 bytes (64 KiB), with 20 byte-change undo steps. Byte-grid preview shows 256 bytes, character inspection 128 code points and comparison 100 differing positions; counts and exports use the full buffer. Supported encodings are explicit; invalid text is reported, never repaired. Browser text entry may normalise line endings, so use hex or a local file for exact original bytes. This is a small byte workbench, not a disk editor or file-format parser.

What happens to my data?

Your input, byte buffer, comparison and undo history stay in this tab’s memory. Files are read only when you choose one, never uploaded, and file names are not kept. Refreshing or closing the tab discards this work. Clipboard copies and downloaded files can outlive the tab. The tool has no analytics or automatic storage. These public pages offer the suite’s optional analytics separately; ordinary requests for pages, scripts and the same-origin suite catalogue may be logged by hosting providers.
